Fall is Here, Back to School

The kids are back in school and finally at the same school - St. Anthony's in Lorain.

Rose is now in second grade.  She still loves to read and her favorite subject is still math.  Rose wants to be a teacher when she grows up.  After discussing how the first woman is scheduled to land on the moon by 2024, Rose is determined to be the first woman on Mars.  In addition to school, Rose bridged from Daisies to Brownies late in the summer.

Jacob started kindergarden this August.  He's still adjusting to being in school full-time five days a week but otherwise loves.  He enjoys telling us about his day and the doings of his classmates.  More recently, Jacob has been doing well learning to read, especially Elephant and Piggie books, and has been having us quiz him constantly on sight words - even ones he isn't required to know yet!

Almost Half the Year Gone

The first half of the year has flown by!

Rose continues to excel in school.  She loves math (thank you Odd Squad) and is reading at the level of a second semester 3rd grader.  She loves chapter books, and is about 30 pages into 10 different books right now.  Rose loves basketball, and finally started figuring out Junior Hoops at the end of the season, when she learned to use her height to her advantage.  Once we taught her to stand under the basket with her arms up and wait for the ball, she had 4 baskets in her last 3 games!  Rose also enjoyed following the Notre Dame women's basketball team, and even had a small meltdown when she learned that she missed their Elite Eight game because she was at a (very fun) bowling birthday party.

Rose is staying active this summer too, as she's now involved in Daisies and is in her second full year of coach pitch softball.  Rose has settled in at first base and has already made some nice scoops on low throws.  Rose and Jacob have also started to take up our interest in running, completing two races and an obstacle course run already this year, with more to come.  When Rose isn't doing anything organized, she can be found reading or racing around the neighborhood on her scooter.

Jacob is now a preschool and a Safety Town graduate.  He's more than ready for kindergarten, and his new teacher agrees, giving him 3 thumbs up on his readiness test!  Jacob remains interested in food, adding gardening to his love of cooking this spring.  He also remains fascinated in calendars, is starting to guess words based on their letter sounds, and shares his sister's love of math (thanks again Odd Squad).  When the weather permits, Jacob is playing t-ball, running with his sister, and starting to figure out how to ride a bike without training wheels.
